Today I read interesting quotation from 3 chapter HYP which actually recommends to eat well during practice which increases fire.
आहारो बहुलस्तस्य सम्पाद्यः साधकस्य च॥८०॥
अल्पाहारो यदि भवेदग्निर्दहति तत्क्षणात्।
Plenty of (bahulaḥ) of food (āhāraḥ) is to be afforded (sampādyaḥ) to that (táasya) adept (sādhakasya ca)
If (yádi) there is (bhavet) little (álpa) food (āhāraḥ), (that) fire (agníḥ) burns (dahati) (the body) immediately (tatkṣaṇāt).
It is in the context of Viparītakaraṇī but it's valid for any practice which increases the fire. For example this are some of the asanas in chapter 1. (mayurasana ... and perhaps all in ashtanga-vinyasa ;)
And more one should always think that all the fires in the body are part of the gastric fire. The are responsible to transform all the dhatus, from gross to subtle. For us now it correspond also to functions of immune system, digestive enzymes, some parts of the endocrine system. On mental level it's penetrative power of our mind.
Furthermore Gorakṣanātha says acc. HYP 1 Chapter:
तथा हि गोरक्षवचनम् - वर्जयेद्दुर्जनप्रान्तं वह्निस्त्रीपथिसेवनम्।
प्रातःस्नानोपवासादि कायक्लेशविधिं तथा॥६१॥
... One should avoid (varjayet) ... fasting(upavāsa)
